Special Interview

Ask KADOYA!
"Attention Leather Jacket Enthusiasts: Don't Overlook Your Hangers!"

We had the opportunity to speak with "KADOYA," the legendary leather jacket manufacturer celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. KADOYA has been using NAKATA HANGER for store displays, customer giveaways and anniversary commemorative items. In this interview, they shared insights on not only why hangers matter so much for leather jacket storage, but also KADOYA's unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and quality manufacturing.

KADOYA Planning Department, Mr. Kotani

About Hangers

Could you tell us what led KADOYA to start using NAKATA HANGER?
I believe it was initially introduced to enhance the display quality of our top-tier HEAD FACTORY (HF) products. Since HF was a completely new line for us and we wanted to present it as KADOYA's flagship premium collection, every detail mattered—including the hangers. We chose them based on their inherent quality, level of craftsmanship, and sophisticated design.
What was your first impression when you first held a NAKATA HANGER?
My first impression was how thick and substantial it felt—there's a unique sense of luxury to it. It's incredibly sturdy; you know it won't break even with our heaviest jackets.
When you look at the shoulder thickness in particular, you immediately think "now this is an exceptional hanger." Just considering how a jacket sits when hung—the presence it has—the way it brings out the character of a leather jacket is completely different.
Could you tell us about the aspects of the HF hanger's specifications and design that you were particular about?
We focused heavily on the shoulder width and thickness to maintain the jacket's natural shoulder shape and really enhance the silhouette. Weight capacity was also crucial since we'd be hanging some seriously heavy leather jackets—we needed something that could handle that without any issues.
[From NAKATA HANGER]
For the HF series, we use much thicker hooks than usual and position them deeper than normal to handle all the stress that comes from hanging and removing those heavy jackets. Because our hangers are carved from a single piece of wood—no joints or weak points—we can actually place the hook much deeper for extra stability. The hanger we created for HEAD FACTORY products is genuinely engineered specifically for heavy leather jackets.
When storing leather jackets, what should people be careful about?
Once leather gets stretched out in certain areas, you really can't fix it. So hangers should match the jacket's shoulder width reasonably well, provide proper thickness, and let the shoulders settle naturally during storage—this actually extends the leather jacket's lifespan. Beyond hangers, you want to avoid areas where moisture builds up, or you'll end up with mold. Ideally, give them a light airing in the shade once per season, or especially after the rainy season ends.
What would happen if you hung a leather jacket on a thin, narrow hanger like a wire hanger?
You'd get the shape distortion I mentioned earlier, plus unsightly pressure marks from the thin wire. When the shoulder thickness and width don't match properly, the jacket's shoulder tips will stretch and bulge out unnaturally. And considering cowhide jackets can weigh 2-3 kg, that thin wire hook will bend, causing the jacket to fall, or the hanger might snap completely. A sturdy hanger construction is absolutely essential. Most genuine leather jackets cost a fortune—they're serious investments. If something damaging happens to a jacket you bought intending to wear for years, something you've grown attached to as it develops character over time, it would be heartbreaking. Simply put investing in proper hangers just makes sense.
There are many commercial thick hangers available besides NAKATA HANGER. Among all these options, could you tell us why one should specifically choose NAKATA HANGER?
NAKATA HANGER has particularly excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail that I really appreciate. They have a unique character that's different from plastic hangers, and the way the wood texture matches with natural materials is exceptionally good. The way jackets sit when hung and how good they look hanging—that's something only wooden hangers can provide. So for anyone wanting to keep their favorite piece in good condition for the longest time, I would strongly recommend NAKATA HANGER.
Many people love leather jackets but haven't yet realized the importance of hangers. Could you share a message to people out there that could change their minds from "Any hanger will do" to "maybe I need to pay attention to hangers too"?
As I mentioned earlier, leather material cannot be restored to its original shape once it stretches in certain areas. And when strange wrinkles form, it's difficult to completely smooth them out. So it's definitely better to use hangers with appropriate thickness and shoulder width that match your jacket. Beyond that, wooden hangers have incomparably superior beauty compared to plastic hangers.
Since you're spending good money on leather jackets, using hangers that can maintain their beautiful condition and that make you smile when you see them hanging should significantly increase your satisfaction as an owner.
I also look at my leather jackets lined up on my hanger rack and think "which one should I wear today?" When my favorite jacket and a carefully chosen hanger come together, it really moves me. When I pick it up, I feel like "this is my best outfit!" If it were just for storage, I might think plastic hangers would be fine, but for keeping favorite pieces in the best condition while satisfying that sense of ownership you get from luxury goods, wooden hangers are exceptional.
Leather jackets become more endearing as you wear them—every wrinkle and scuff mark becomes precious. Wooden hangers also develop character as you use them, with the surface gradually wearing and gaining patina, creating a sense of unity. This is character that plastic hangers simply cannot develop.

About KADOYA's Craftsmanship

Could you tell us about the points you consider to be "KADOYA unique strengths that make it second to none" in your manufacturing?
First and foremost, it's the craftsmanship and artisan spirit that we maintain in Asakusa, our founding location, where we still conduct development and production today.
What happens after products reach customers' hands and years or even decades pass? Do we maintain products and services that can continue to support them even then? I think there are very few apparel manufacturers or brands that operate while consistently upholding this philosophy.
Our company celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, and we take pride in being the oldest leather wear manufacturer. The history of craftsmen continuously creating products by hand, one piece at a time since our establishment, is unmatched elsewhere. This connects directly to the quality that allows us to continuously support our customers. We don't have the mindset of simply making products and selling them— our unique strength lies in continuing our craftsmanship with the commitment to taking responsibility for what we create.
What are the attractive qualities of KADOYA products that mass-produced items don't have?
Take our HEAD FACTORY products, for example—they're made at our main facility using traditional craftsmanship methods. Our skilled artisans hand-select each piece of leather and carefully plan the layout before beginning the detailed preparation and sewing process that's tailored to each specific material and design. This attention to detail creates a completely different wearing experience from the moment you put it on.
The shoulders and arms are built with three-dimensional construction that wraps around your body naturally. Even though we use high-quality, firm leather, it never feels stiff or uncomfortable against your skin—that's what makes these jackets special. We use intricate manufacturing techniques that simply can't be replicated in mass production, which gives you incredible comfort while ensuring the jacket will last for years. What really sets our leather jackets apart is how they age beautifully and evenly over time. It might seem like a small detail, but achieving that consistent aging process requires an incredible amount of care and expertise in every step of production.
When compared to others, what points make you think "that's so KADOYA‑like"?
I'd say it's the three-dimensional construction from the craftsmanship I mentioned before, combined with that substantial, built-to-last durability. While there are differences between overseas-produced jackets and HEAD FACTORY pieces, both share these fundamental qualities.
What really sets HEAD FACTORY apart, though, is the stitching—you can spot KADOYA HEAD FACTORY work instantly just by looking at the seams. The stitching is incredibly uniform and precise, done with thick thread at a wide pitch that really showcases the leather's natural texture. I could honestly talk about their stitching technique all night! (laughs)
KADOYA's concept is making leather jackets for motorcycle riders, what are the main differences from regular leather jackets?
The biggest structural difference is that they're designed with a forward-reaching cut, making them much easier to move in. Unlike fashion leather jackets, ours are specifically tailored to minimize that feeling of restriction when you're in a riding position. Also, since motorcycle gear needs to emphasize durability, we construct them to withstand the kind of wear and tear that comes with riding—they won't break down easily even with heavy use.
Nakata Kogei Sales Department Mr. Inaba
In recent years, AI development has had a major impact on various fields of society. As KADOYA celebrates its 90th anniversary, do you think there will be any changes in your approach to manufacturing for the future?
I think AI can handle basic design work, but manufacturing isn't just about that. I believe that the combination of corporate knowledge and experience, plus the skills and expertise of our craftspeople, are essential for true craftsmanship.
Creating good products still requires human knowledge and hands.
However, data-driven predictions and analysis would be more accurate than human intuition alone, so I think there's significant potential for improving how we approach and execute manufacturing planning—we can make those processes much more efficient.
KADOYA has many customers from overseas. How do overseas customers think about your products?
I think overseas customers really appreciate the quality and uniqueness of our products. KADOYA has cherished three themes: "craftsmanship," "evolution of classics," and "bringing innovation to the times." I'm pleased that this attitude we've maintained for years is being conveyed through our products, even in overseas markets where we haven't done any promotion before. We also started cross-border e-commerce last year and it's starting to show results. I think there's real potential going forward, and I'm happy that our craftsmanship goes beyond borders.
Our company has two slogans: "optimization of basic products" and "creation of innovative items. "What I find encouraging is that our long-standing approach—creating innovative products with genuine passion while continuously improving our existing products with humility—seems to resonate globally.
I think both hangers and leather jackets can last a lifetime if properly cared for. Could you share a message for those who want to use one item for the longest time?
The modern world is a world of mass production and mass consumption. I think everyone shops following trends with the common attitude of "this will do for now." But isn't it more enjoyable to choose what you actually like and prefer? Something you bear in mind as "I love this, I want to treasure this" while looking at it. Having preferences is strongly connected to defining who you are as a person. It makes your character richer and stronger. So I really wish everyone would develop their own preferences. At our company, we often receive consultations and requests like "I want to resize my leather jacket so I can give it to my child or grandchild." Being able to have the next generation—children and grandchildren—understand and inherit the motorcycles and leather jackets you love is a wonderful way to live. I want to hold onto our company philosophy and keep our brand true to it, so we can forever be part of such beautiful stories.
Through our conversation today, we discovered many shared aspects between KADOYA and Nakata Kogei in our thinking and approach to manufacturing. KADOYA's leather jackets accompany the wearer, while NAKATA HANGER's hangers accompany the clothing. Beyond our dedication to our products, we want to deliver products that will continue to enrich everyone's daily lives for years to come.
The interview was conducted at KADOYA's main store. We had a consistently pleasant conversation surrounded by the aroma of leather. Thank you very much!
